Flint sits where two of Michigan’s main freight routes cross. I-75 carries trucks between Detroit, Saginaw and northern Michigan, and I-69 links Flint to Lansing and to the Blue Water Bridge border crossing at Port Huron. In 2024, 503 trucks and buses weighing more than 10,000 pounds were involved in crashes in Genesee County. When an 80,000-pound rig hits a passenger car, the people in the car carry nearly all of the injuries. A Flint truck accident lawyer can move quickly to protect the evidence a trucking company controls and pursue every insurance policy that applies.

How a Flint Truck Accident Lawyer Can Help
A trucking company and its insurer usually send people to a serious crash within hours. Their job is to limit what the company pays. Ours is to make sure the facts are preserved before they disappear. After a Flint semi crash, our team:
- Sends a written demand that the carrier keep the truck’s electronic logging device data, engine control module download, dashcam video and dispatch messages
- Requests the driver’s hours-of-service records, qualification file and drug and alcohol test results
- Gets the Michigan State Police or local police report, including any commercial vehicle inspection done after the crash
- Identifies every company with a role in the trip: the carrier, the trailer owner, the shipper, the loader and the maintenance shop
- Handles your No-Fault claim so your medical bills and lost wages are paid while the injury claim moves forward
- Files suit in Genesee County when the carrier’s insurer will not offer fair compensation

Truck Crashes in Genesee County: The 2024 Numbers
The 2024 Michigan Traffic Crash Facts report for Genesee County counted 503 trucks and buses over 10,000 pounds in crashes in the county. Four of those vehicles were in fatal crashes, and 96 were in crashes that injured at least one person. Countywide, Genesee had 10,087 reported crashes that year, with 53 fatal crashes and 54 people killed.
A Semi Crash on I-75 in Flint Township
In one crash reported by ABC12, a FedEx semi rear-ended a car that had stopped on northbound I-75 near Miller Road in Flint Township. The semi then rolled over against the median wall, and a 29-year-old was badly injured. Flint Township Police investigated and said the driver of the stopped car may have been intoxicated.
A crash like that shows why truck cases need careful investigation. More than one person’s conduct can be at issue, the truck’s following distance and speed are recorded electronically, and the carrier’s records may show whether the driver was fatigued or behind schedule. Fault can be shared, and each share affects what the injured person recovers.
Flint-Area Roads Where Trucks and Cars Collide
The I-75 and I-69 Interchange
Southwest of downtown, through traffic on both freeways merges and exits within a short distance. Trucks need long gaps to change lanes, and drivers cutting in front of them leave too little room to stop. Rear-end and sideswipe crashes are common here, especially in heavy traffic.
I-475 Work Zones
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has scheduled a rebuild of I-475 from the Flint River to Bristol Road from spring 2026 through fall 2028. Narrowed lanes, barrier walls and sudden backups give a loaded semi little room for error. When work zone setup contributes to a crash, the contractor may share responsibility.
Industrial and Commercial Corridors
Box trucks, tankers and delivery vans travel Bristol Road, Miller Road, Dort Highway and Saginaw Street to reach warehouses, plants and stores. Wide right turns, trucks backing into loading docks and blind spots on the passenger side cause many local crashes. Our pages on blind spot accidents, underride accidents and truck rollover accidents explain those crash types.
Federal Safety Rules Truck Drivers Must Follow
Interstate trucking companies are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). A violation does not automatically decide a case, but it is strong evidence of negligence. Rules that often come up in Flint cases include:
- Hours of service: property-carrying drivers may drive no more than 11 hours after 10 hours off duty, and not beyond the 14th hour after coming on duty
- Electronic logs: most drivers must record their hours on an electronic logging device
- Drug and alcohol testing: carriers must test commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders before hiring, after certain crashes and at random
- Inspection and maintenance: brakes, tires and lights must be inspected and repaired, with records kept
- Minimum insurance: interstate carriers hauling general freight must carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage, and more for some hazardous loads
Michigan adds its own rules on weight, equipment and commercial licensing. Our page on Michigan trucking laws and regulations has more detail.
Who May Be Liable for a Flint Truck Crash
- The truck driver, for speeding, distraction, fatigue or impairment
- The motor carrier, for the driver’s conduct on the job and for its own hiring, training and scheduling decisions
- The owner of the tractor or trailer, under Michigan’s owner liability statute
- A shipper or loader whose overweight or unsecured cargo shifted
- A repair shop that did faulty brake or tire work
- Another driver whose actions set off the crash
Each of these may carry a separate insurance policy. Read more in who is liable in a commercial truck accident in Michigan.
No-Fault Benefits and Your Claim Against the Carrier
If you were in a car when a truck hit you, your own auto policy, or a household relative’s, generally pays your personal injury protection (PIP) benefits first: medical care up to your chosen limit, most of your lost wages for up to three years, replacement services and mileage. Truck drivers hurt on the job may be covered by the employer’s insurer or workers’ compensation instead. Our Michigan No-Fault lawyer page explains how those benefits work.
PIP does not cover pain and suffering. That claim goes against the driver and the trucking company once your injuries meet Michigan’s serious impairment threshold under MCL 500.3135. Because truck crashes so often cause fractures, spinal injuries and brain injuries, many meet it. The claim can also cover lost income beyond PIP and medical costs above your PIP limit. When a crash is fatal, the family may pursue a wrongful death claim.
Injuries We See After Semi-Truck Collisions
The size gap between a semi and a car means injuries are often severe: traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken ribs and pelvis, internal organ injuries, burns and crush injuries. Many seriously injured people in the Flint area are treated at Hurley Medical Center, a Level I adult trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons. Long recoveries mean ongoing therapy, attendant care and time away from work, all of which should be documented from the start.
After a Truck Accident Near Flint
- Call 911 and get medical care. Freeway crashes are typically handled by the Michigan State Police Genesee County Post.
- Photograph the truck’s U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) number, company name, trailer number and license plates.
- Take pictures of the vehicles, the lanes, any work zone signs and skid marks.
- Get witness names and phone numbers, including other truck drivers who stopped.
- Do not sign anything or give a recorded statement to the trucking company’s insurer.
- Report the crash to your own auto insurer to open your No-Fault claim.
- Contact a lawyer quickly so the carrier’s electronic data is preserved. Our guide on how to file a truck accident claim in Michigan walks through the process.
Filing Deadlines for Flint Truck Accident Claims
Your insurer generally must receive written notice of a No-Fault claim within one year under MCL 500.3145. A lawsuit against the truck driver and carrier generally must be filed within three years under MCL 600.5805. The practical deadline is much shorter: carriers are not always required to keep electronic data and video for long, so a preservation letter in the first days matters. Serious injury cases in Genesee County are filed in the 7th Circuit Court at 900 S. Saginaw Street in Flint.

Flint Truck Accident FAQs
How much is a semi-truck accident case worth?
It depends on the severity and permanence of your injuries, your lost income, how fault is shared and the insurance available. Truck cases often involve larger policies than car cases, but no amount is ever certain.
The trucking company is based in another state. Can I sue in Flint?
Generally, yes. A carrier that operates on Michigan roads can usually be sued in the county where the crash happened, which for most Flint-area crashes is Genesee County.
What if a delivery van or box truck hit me, not a semi?
The same No-Fault and liability rules apply. If the driver was working, the employer can usually be held responsible, and some federal rules still apply to vehicles over 10,000 pounds used in interstate commerce.
Should I talk to the trucking company’s insurance adjuster?
You are not required to, and we recommend speaking with a lawyer first. What you say can be used to argue your injuries are minor or that you caused the crash.
How long does a truck accident case take?
Some settle within months once treatment is complete. Cases with disputed fault or several defendants can take a year or more, especially if a lawsuit is filed.
What does a Flint truck accident attorney charge?
We charge nothing upfront. Our fee is a percentage of the recovery, and if we do not recover money for you, you owe no attorney fee.
